Snacking is something we all do, and actually, comes highly recommended around Homegrown. There is a trick to it, though, beginning with putting down those potato chips and getting your hands dirty with a completely different piece of produce: Asian pears.
Asian pears, one of our organic specialty fall fruits, have a familiar apple-like texture and a fresh, lightly sweet taste when fresh that lends itself perfectly to chip form.
Try your own flavor combinations as well, we highly recommend a dash of cinnamon for the upcoming holiday celebrations!
Asian Pear Chips
- 2 Asian Pears sliced think (preferably with a mandolin slicer–approx. 1/8″ thick)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice
Slice pears super thin and remove seeds. In a saucepan over medium heat, heat sugar, water, and lemon juice until sugar is dissolved. Place pear slices in sugar/water mixture and cook for about 3 minutes. Remove pears from the mixture and drain. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 225F. Spray two cookie sheets with cooking spray and cover with parchment paper. Lay pear slices in one layer on cookie sheet, spaced evenly. Place pears in the oven for 1 hour, flip slices over and cook for another 1 hour or until mostly crisp. Remove from oven and allow to crisp up. You can also turn off the oven and allow them to cool and crisp up in the oven.
